In 2015, Walden Theatre / Blue Apple Players started a year-long series of workshops, residencies, touring productions, and matinees with the Summit Academy. The school, located in Middletown, specializes in providing a nurturing environment for children with learning disabilities.
This chance to work closely with Summit’s amazing students comes thanks to a partnership between Kosair Charities and the Fund for the Arts. For five years, the Arts for Kosair Kids initiative provides $600,000 to engage special needs children with arts programming. Walden/Blue Apple’s wide range of programming was a great match for the school, and our teaching artists have embraced the opportunity to work closely and creatively with these elementary, middle, and high school kids as part of the Kosair initiative.
In our most recent visit to Summit, we were able to capture images that tell just two of the many ongoing stories we’re creating with these active, engaged young people.
We’ll have more stories to tell soon, including perspectives from teaching artists, student perspectives, and insights from teachers. Stay tuned!
