Welcome to Wandaland
by Ifa Bayeza
directed by Karen Edwards-Hunter
assisted by Julane Havens
Thu-Fri-Sat @ 7:30 and Sat @ 2:00
4th grader Wanda is on a mission to learn everything there is to know in the world so that she can pass an intelligence test and catapult into a newly desegregated “gifted” school. As she learns about Civil Rights, the Cold War, & the Space Race, her test mania collides with a budding understanding of her own identity and her place in this world.
Welcome To Wandaland sways between wide-eyed, mischievous youth and hopeful but hardened adults, and while it touches on the issues that black families faced in the 1950s and 60s (and yesterday, and today) its lyricism and lovingly-rendered characters ground the play on deeply personal terms.
