Commonwealth Theatre Center is excited to announce that this year’s Young American Shakespeare Festival (YASF) will serve as our return to live and in-person theatre, and that for the first time in over forty years, we’ll be performing Shakespeare outside – by converting our parking lot into a brand-new stage!
YASF will feature the following Shakespeare plays running in rotating repertory:
Directed by Charlie Sexton
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Directed by Jennifer Pennington
COMEDY OF ERRORS
Directed by Jessica De La Rosa
This year, CTC will also add pre-show experiences for audience members of all ages, spanning across theatre, music, visual art, activities for younger kids, and more. All this, plus the inclusion of food and beverage options, ensure that this year will be one of the most memorable Young American Shakespeare Festivals yet.
When: May 6-16, 2021. The plays, running in repertory, will each have five performances during that window. Shows will run every day, with two performances running on Saturdays and Sundays.
Where: To maintain accessibility given ongoing social distancing guidelines, CTC will produce this festival outside in our parking lot. A stage will be built behind the CTC campus, with audience “pods” for families and friends to gather, engage in pre-show activities, and safely watch the show together.
Tickets: $15/person, per show. Food and beverage options will also be available for purchase. Tickets will go on sale in the coming weeks.

About the Young American Shakespeare Festival
Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Commonwealth Theatre Center’s Walden Theatre Conservatory was the first youth conservatory in the world to fully produce the entire canon of Shakespeare’s plays. The company builds on this unmatched achievement each spring with the Young American Shakespeare Festival (YASF) – the largest and longest-running such festival by and for young people in the nation.
In a typical year, YASF engages approximately 70-80 youth as actors, stage managers, etc. and welcomes over a thousand audience members. We anticipate that this year’s increased accessibility will make the 2021 YASF one of the most memorable and successful yet.
