Project: Touring Production – Educational Theatre

Description: Commonwealth Theatre Center (CTC) is seeking a Black actor (male identifying) in the Louisville, KY area for the play No Turning Back by playwright Keith McGill.  This 2 actor play showcases vignettes that tell the story of Black History as it relates to Louisville, KY.  Directed by Keith McGill, it will tour to local schools in the months of January – February. 

Union/Non: Non-union

Dates: Initial rehearsals and a filming session are scheduled for August. Pick-up rehearsals and tour training are scheduled for December/January with tour dates scheduled for January – February 2022.

Term: August 2021 – March 2022

Rehearsals currently scheduled for Aug 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19 from 1pm-3pm

Filming scheduled for Aug 19, 20, 26, 27 from 1pm-5pm 

Media: Live Theatre for touring production with filmed edition for marketing purposes (or virtual program options, if needed).

Territory: Greater Louisville Area, including surrounding counties in KY and Southern IN.

Exclusivity: No exclusivity is required for this job. Rehearsals and performances will be scheduled during school hours (Mon-Fri from 7am-4pm) and availability is required during the months of August, January, February and March. Two public performances are scheduled on Saturday, February 5th (matinee and evening). Any additional evening performance requests must be pre-approved pending the actors’ availability.

Rates: 

Rehearsals/Filming: $15 per hour for rehearsal (approx. 30 hrs) and filming  (approx. 20 hours) in August (plus all usage) and review/pick up rehearsal/tour training in December/January (approx. 30 hours). 

Touring Live Performances: Fees are  $50 per performance (includes travel to site in company vehicle, plus set up and break down of simple set/props/costumes).

Please Note: Artists must reside in the Louisville, KY area.  Some flexibility in scheduling. Opportunities for additional contract teaching artist work during Sept-Dec and beyond.

About the Playwright: Keith McGill has been a freelance theater teacher and workshop leader for over 25 years for organizations including Shakespeare Behind Bars, Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, ArtsReach, Commonwealth Theatre Center, and Actors Theatre’s New Voices playwriting program. He has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Louisville. He created a one-person show about civil rights entitled Nation in Crisis, as well as crafting the current version of No Turning Back, both for CTC. Keith directed Ghost for StageOne, several plays for Actors Theatre’s New Voices Festival, and for the past two years has directed for Derby City Playwrights. He has appeared in productions with Actors Theatre, Looking for Lilith, and Stage One, as well as various regional and national television commercials and several films and TV series. His Shakespearean roles include Caliban in The Tempest, Leontes in The Winter’s Tale, Touchstone in As You Like It, and Gloucester in King Lear. Keith was a 2019 Hadley Creative and serves on the board of Elevator Artists Resource. For the past three decades, Keith has also worked as a stand-up comedian, appearing nationally on LAUGHS on Fox, and The Bob and Tom Show, CMT and BET, as well as being a featured entertainer on Holland American and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
