In this two-week intensive, student-playwrights will give Shakespeare a run for his money! We’ll write one-minute plays, ten-minute plays, and maybe even get started on something longer. We’ll ask the questions: How do you capture the audience’s attention? How do you sustain it? How do you craft a narrative that’s compelling? Dynamic? ALIVE? The class will culminate in a staged reading with professional actors. In other words, students will get to experience their dramatic writing as it’s meant to be experienced: OUT LOUD.

Open to all experience levels.

The Contemporary Acting Intensive is split into 3 parts: warm up with voice and movement, contemporary scene work, and we’ll end with improv. The students will need to wear clothes they feel comfortable moving in … so no jeans or dresses, but they are welcome to bring a change of clothes if they desire for after their warm up. They’ll also need to bring a copy of their favorite poem. Students will work on a scene that we assign throughout the 3 weeks, and perform them in an invited showcase on the final day. There will be a 30 minute lunch break each day. At this level, students are allowed to leave the building and go to a local restaurant and come back for lunch. In the final week, we will have a day where we talk about “the business”, and what it means to be a working actor/theatre artist. All levels of acting are welcome. Just a willingness to learn!

The teachers for the class are all alumni of our conservatory: Melinda Beck (CTC alum 2007; BFA Theatre from Cornish College for the Arts), Aaron Roitman (CTC alum 2015; BFA Acting from Write State University), and Mitchell Martin (CTC alum 2009; BFA Acting Northern Illinois University; CTC staff member).
