Virtual Summer Programs 2020

Join us this summer for some socially-distant fun! Our Artistic staff have developed a wide catalogue of virtual live and pre-recorded summer camp options for ages 3 and up. We can’t wait to “see” you!

Live Virtual Camps

In these live virtual programs, students will take part in camp during the times indicated below via interactive video format. (Pre-recorded programs will follow in the next section.)

Ages 5-12

ART CAMP with Laura Patterson

1 week (choose one):

We will focus on drawing, painting, sculpture, the Elements of Art, Art History, and more! Supplies will be provided. Parents will need to help the younger students get set up and logged in, but we encourage you to let them independently participate and create during the class.

Ages 8-13

PLAYBUILDING with Heather Burns, Mera Kathryn Corlett, Meg Caudill, Charlie Sexton

2 weeks, Mon-Fri:

Session A: June 8 – June 19

Build a play from the ground up! Through acting exercises and ensemble building, students will devise a play, incorporating script writing and costume design. Supplies include make-up kit, mask design template, costume design template, colored pencils, and more.
UPDATE: Session A was offered in 2 sections based on age. Sessions B, C, and D are combined. Please note the times are not the same for all sessions.

Ages 13+

SHAKESPEARE: TEXT & TECHNIQUE with Jessica De La Rosa & Charlie Sexton

A deep look into three plays – discussing major scenes and using the texts to explore various voice and movement exercises.

CONTEMPORARY ACTING with Jessica De La Rosa & Charlie Sexton

Explore modern works from a variety of playwrights in this intensive scene study class. Using text analysis and exercises in vocal techniques, we will discuss the nuances of contemporary acting.

Ages 6-18

AUDITION SKILLS with Sharon Kinnison

Ages 6-18
1 week: July 27 – July 31
Mon-Fri, 9:30am – Noon

We’ll focus on three areas: duet scene study, solo and choral work, and ensemble movement. Using Zoom breakout rooms, students will explore duet scene/song work, emphasizing relationship, intention, use of energy to develop character, and grounding the work in the text. Students will also learn an ensemble piece that provides options for solo work and will learn movement to the ensemble piece. A zoom showcase will take place on the final day of class.

SCENE AND SONG STUDY with Sharon Kinnison

Ages 10-18
1 week: August 3 – August 7
Mon-Fri, 9:30am – Noon

Emphasizing the fun of this process and seeking to meet the student where they are in their own process, we’ll take on three disciplines with breakout sessions focused on acting, singing, and movement. On the last day of class where students present their work in a mock audition. Students will finish the class with a new song, a new monologue, and an increased ability in movement and dance.

Pre-Recorded Programs

Choose any combination (or all!) of the programs below. We’ll provide instructions for accessing the content and then you and your child can do the activity any time you wish. Watch for additional pre-recorded options that will be released in July!

READINESS ADVENTURE: HONEYBEE FLIGHT 

with Heather Burns & Meg Caudill

Target ages: 3-5 (but anyone can enjoy the interactive fun!)

Recording 30 min, with additional 1+ hour activity time

(includes accompanying lesson guide, enrichment activities, and a box of props)

After meeting the queen, a group of young honeybees sets out on their adventurous new job – finding pollen and nectar! With the help of an experienced forager bee, the new team learns waggle dance directions and collect treasures to bring home to the hive. Children and adults enter the world of pretend to become the characters and act out a story filled with challenges that also build school readiness skills.

MOVEMENT FOR STORIES: ADVENTURES IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA 

with Hallie Dizdarevic & Meg Caudill

Target ages: 3-9 (but anyone can enjoy the interactive fun!)

1 hour

A skilled teaching artist will lead participants in an interactive storytelling where kids get to play all of the parts! The first half of the workshop, Life in the Bass Lane, will encourage students to use their imaginations to explore different parts of the ocean. Next, students will embark on an alphabetical treasure hunt, complete with pirates!

MOVEMENT FOR STORIES: ADVENTURES IN OUTER SPACE 

with Hallie Dizdarevic

Target ages: 3-9 (but anyone can enjoy the interactive fun!)

1 hour

A skilled teaching artist leads participants on a journey across the galaxy as they fly in an imaginary spaceship. First stop, Planet Xogo, an imaginary world filled with obstacles and extraterrestrials. Next up, a tour of our own solar system, that encourages students to experience real life science using imagination and creative movement.

MOVEMENT FOR STORIES: LA PINTORA Y LOS DUENDES (The Painter and the Elves)

with Meg Caudill & Haydee Canovas

Target ages: 3-9 (but anyone can enjoy the interactive fun!)

1 hour

In this Spanish language Movement for Stories program, participants play the role of mischievous elves who stumble upon some open paint cans. Students will explore a variety of movements while learning Spanish words for colors and body parts.

PUPPET THEATRE IN-A-BOX

with Meg Caudill

Target ages: 5 and up

Recording 30 min, with additional 1+ hour activity time

(includes tips for adult helpers, enrichment activities, and supplies)

This camp-in-a-box program sets you up with a cardboard box filled with all the things you’ll need to turn it into your very own puppet theatre. Meg will walk you through the steps to engage your imagination and make your very own stories! Includes tips for parents and supplies.

Cancellation Policy:
Enrollments in Live Virtual Camps are subject to a non-refundable fee equal to 50% of the price of the camp. *Cancellation notice must be received via email to enroll@commonwealththeatre.org at least 3 days prior to the first day of the program. Failure to notify CTC in time will result in forfeit of entire camp fee.
